Why Being Smart Isn't the Same as Being a Strong Thinker
We tend to treat “strong thinking” as a synonym for “being smart.”
A kid gets good grades, reads above level, remembers everything, answers quickly, and we think: strong thinker!
But those things mostly tell us what a child already knows.
Strong thinking is different. It happens when a child enters a situation they don’t know.
What happens when the rules change? When there are no right answers? When the first plan fails and they have to adapt? When there are conflicts and disagreements about the best way forward?
Good grades don’t help here, and even “smart kids” can get frustrated.
A strong thinker, however, can make sense of something unfamiliar, think several moves ahead, weigh tradeoffs, change course when the evidence changes, stick with a hard problem, and form their own judgment.
And that matters well beyond school: in a 2025 survey of 500 hiring managers, 94% said they prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving when hiring candidates [1].
If we want to help kids succeed, they’ll need to practice those skills.
The first question is where. The second question is how.
Give them somewhere to practice
The good news is that parents can build “thinking practice” experiences deliberately.
Do something genuinely difficult together: build a treehouse, plant a garden, fix up an old bike — something where things will go wrong, where plans will inevitably change.
Give them responsibility for something real: planning a family outing, managing a budget, organizing an event, or running a project where their decisions actually matter.
Or put them in an environment designed to create these moments repeatedly.
That’s a big part of what we do at Synthesis. Kids enter unfamiliar games, make decisions with incomplete information, test ideas, disagree with teammates, change strategies, and try again.
We don’t tell kids what to think. That has to come from inside them. But we do help them think about their thinking. And when that gets stronger, so do their skills.
Some tips from Synthesis coaches to raise strong thinkers
1. Sensemaking: Explain less
When your child doesn’t understand something, don’t explain it immediately.
Give them a minute.
Then be curious: “What do you think is going on here?”
It could be a game, a broken toy, a confusing situation — figuring out what matters, even with incomplete information, is good practice.

2. Multi-Step Decision Making: What happens next?
We see kids tend to focus on the decision right in front of them.
So occasionally, we push the timeline forward: “If you do that, what do you think will happen next? And after that?”
You’re not trying to get them to predict the future. But you are trying to build the habit of thinking moves ahead.

3. Tradeoff Thinking: Give them choices without perfect answers
We give kids lots of “choices,” but we don’t give them a lot of actual power to make decisions. What if we give kids some real ones?
Let them see two options. Both have an upside. Both have a downside.
Instead of deciding for them, have a discussion about what they think matters most. Then go with it, even if you disagree.
It won’t happen right away, but you’ll really start to see tradeoff thinking develop when choosing one thing actually means giving up another.

4. Adaptability: The confidence to change course
Kids do need to learn persistence. That’s also an important skill. But persistence isn’t always the answer in every situation.
Strong thinking also means recognizing that your plan isn’t working and changing it.
If you see your child doing that, bring it up: “I noticed that you saw something wasn’t working and changed your approach.”
There’s a difference between quitting and learning, and we can help kids find that difference early.

5. Persistence: Let them stay stuck
It’s uncomfortable for parents to watch their child being stuck. It’s even worse when you know exactly how to help. That’s why we jump in to solve our kids’ problems.
But if we solve the problem every time frustration appears, kids don’t get practice finding their own way past obstacles.
We don’t have to leave them stranded. But if we wait just a little longer than feels natural, there’s a good conversation waiting on the other side.

6. Independent Judgment: Let them discuss and disagree
This last one is from me, Aaron. When your child thinks you’re wrong, resist the urge to react.
Instead, get curious: ask them why. Ask what their reasons are. Actually consider those. (They’ll know if you’re faking it.)
Have a discussion. Model the behavior of weighing evidence and reasoning. If they have a good point, concede it. If you have a good point, help them see its merits.
Their world is increasingly shared with AI. We need more kids who can consider multiple angles, hold competing ideas at arm’s length, and still decide what they themselves think.
School is already good at teaching kids to get every answer right.
Our goal is to help raise kids who know what to do when there are no right answers.
